Lipidomics

Data generated from the lipidomic analysis workflow is commonly used to study lipid differential expression between experimental conditions and to characterize the lipid composition of a particular condition or tissue.

Lipidomic analysis provides a non-targeted profile of lipids in a set of samples and relative quantitation of those lipids between sample groups. The service includes extraction of lipids from liquids or tissues, identification of lipids by LC/MS/MS, and relative quantification of lipids in each sample by LC/MS. Tissues we have worked with include plasma, serum, liver, pancreas, skin, hair, nerve, eye, heart, intestine, and other non-mammalian tissues, as well as cell pellets.

Common lipid classes identified using this technique include fatty acids, triglycerides, phosphatidylcholides, lysophosphatidylcholines, sphingomyelins, ceramides, cardiolipins, and cholesterol esters, among others. Lipid classes are characterized by comparison with a lipid spectra library using Agilent LipidAnnotator software before quantitation is performed using Agilent ProFinder software. The automated output can then be curated to maximize precision for an additional fee, removing any computer-generated artifacts. Many software applications exist to statistically analyze the data you will receive. Some useful free resources include lipidmaps.org and MetaboAnalyst.

For solid tissues, we require at least 15 mg of tissue per sample

For serum and plasma we need at least 50uL

For cell pellets we need at least 2,000,000 cells

We are willing to attempt other tissues/matrices as requested (contact us)
